What is Salvia hispanica (Chia)?
Chia (Salvia hispanica) is the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids known and contains natural antioxidants. The plant is a member of the mint family and originated in southern Mexico and Guatemala. There are two seed colors, white and black.

Chia was virtually lost for five centuries after the Spanish conquest (due to both religious and agronomic reasons). This changed in the 1990’s as part of an effort lead by the University of Arizona to establish new crops in northwestern Argentina. This project led to successful commercialization of chia as a crop, making it more widely available today.  Don't be fooled into thinking other chia on the market is like this one though.  They're not even close.

What makes this product better than other varieties of Salvia hispanica?

Some people claim that the white seeds are more potent than the black, but this is not the case. Until Mila was developed, both seeds contained essentially the same amount of omega-3, protein, fiber, etc. It's Dr. Wayne Coates studies with the chia in different climates & altitudes as well as the developments in processing (micro slicing) that have resulted in the much higher quality and much more potent Mila.

Is Mila Certified Organic by the USDA?
The grain is grown without the use of potentially harmful pesticides but is not Certified Organic by the USDA.

Yes. Mila has greater features and benefits over other versions of Salvia hispanica and other sources of Omega-3’s.

Does Mila "go bad" and how do I store it?
Mila's natural antioxidants prevent it from going rancid and the nutrients don't degrade.  Unopened & sealed in the canister, you could keep it for a year or more.  Once opened, you can still keep it for several months but you have to keep it dry.  There is no need to keep it in the refrigerator.  You could keep it in the refrigerator at long as you kept it free of moisture.

Five hundred years ago, the Ancient Aztecs had the ground chia material and used to trade with it back then.  They didn't have the high tech grinding bioavailability things that we have today, or the storage systems, yet they had no issues in keeping the ground material stable.  It should be just fine in your cupboard.

Is Mila safe?
Chia has been consumed by humans for a thousand of years. It was one of the main foods of the Aztecs and Mayas. Karen Ricker, Consumer Safety Office of the FDA , has stated that chia is a food, rather than a supplement, and can be consumed without restrictions.  (May 18, 2005)

Can I give Mila to my pets?
Yes.  The omega-3 in the chia is good for your pet’s skin and fur and will make the coat soft and shiny.  Just mix it into their food, it has no taste so even the picky eaters won't notice.
